"Black Girls Excellence was developed through the lack of support for our black racialized girls within Cambridge. Based on experiences my daughter went through in Cambridge because of the color of her skin, I could not continue to see this. I wanted to make a change or to do something. I felt a comprehensive program for Black girls and racialized youth where no topic was off the table, a space where they were celebrated from the inside out was needed."

“Empowered girls empower the world”
Black Girl Excellence exists to empower and uplift Black girls in Cambridge with continued support for their mental health, creative expression and conversation. A space to claim their voice, build friendships and increase self-esteem.
The Black Girl Excellence Program brings together female identifying young girls and youth from the Black community in Cambridge to explore their unique cultural identities and learn about our bright and vibrant history as it relates to our shared lived experiences. The program is divided into 2 categories for ages, 4-8 and 9 plus.
BGX aims to offer girls lifelong lessons about building their character, believing in themselves, bolstering their self-esteem, and boosting their confidence through our International Day of the Girl Events, Black hair program, and other BGX Programs.
Our goal is to empower girls so they can share their greatness (their stories, wisdom, lessons, and experiences) with the world, ultimately creating real change in the world to help end gender-based discrimination, inequity and violence against girls and young women around the world. Because empowered girls, empower the world!
The purpose of this program is to inspire this generation of girls so they can inspire the next generation of girls to be the best versions of themselves. The idea is to give them the torch through our stories, wisdom, experiences, and lessons thereby equipping them to be the leaders of tomorrow – Black Girl Excellence (BGX). Essentially we are mentoring tomorrow, today so they can live their full potential and realize their excellence.

We empower girls through:

How does the community benefit from BGX?
The BGX Program creates a safe space for Black girls and people of color to be more self-aware and extend their capacity to think for themselves. We are targeting black girls in this initiative but we welcome youth in the community who identify as racialized and wish to participate. This program shows continued examples of Black Excellence within Waterloo Region and within Canada. We want to help to build friendships, hope, and help participants maintain their voices. Black Girl Excellence will continue to develop self awareness, self esteem, empowerment and provide needed information that impacts the Black community. The BGX program will encourage healthy relationships that will inspire participants to gravitate towards positive mental health outcomes. Their participation will give them the tools that direct them to find safe places for healing as a result of trauma.
