Join the Board of Directors for Rhythm & Blues Cambridge!
Are you passionate about uplifting Black communities and making a meaningful impact in Cambridge? Rhythm & Blues Cambridge, a grassroots organization led by Black women, is seeking dedicated individuals to join our Board of Directors. We aim to empower, inform, and inspire the Black community in Cambridge through programs, events, and partnerships that celebrate and showcase the Black experience.
Background
Rhythm & Blues Cambridge, founded in 2018, has operated as a grassroots, unincorporated group for the last several years. As of October 2024, we are officially an incorporated nonprofit in Ontario. We are now seeking up to 5 dedicated individuals to join our small but mighty team of change makers to help us take this next important step in our journey. As a new nonprofit, we are looking for Board members who are excited to be part of building our governance structure, including passing the first version of our bylaws, and who are committed to creating a supportive, collaborative, and caring leadership environment for everyone on the Board and our paid Executive Director. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of our organization and contribute to the broader community in a lasting way.
Position Title: Board Director
Location: Cambridge, Ontario (Remote attendance possible for some meetings)
Commitment: 5-10 hours per month (including Board meetings, committee work, and organizational support)
Key Responsibilities:
● Governance: Provide strategic oversight and ensure the organization is fulfilling its mission to serve the Black community in Cambridge.
● Program Support: Assist with planning, reviewing, and evaluating programs, events, and partnerships, including our signature Black Girls Excellence initiative, Black History Month celebrations, and Emancipation Day.
● Fundraising & Development: Actively participate in fundraising efforts, support sponsorships, and advocate for financial sustainability.
● Community Representation: Represent Rhythm & Blues Cambridge in the community and help build relationships with local stakeholders and partners.
● Strategic Planning: Participate in the development and implementation of long-term goals and objectives, including organizational growth and outreach strategies.
Desired Qualities:
● Black Leadership: As part of our commitment to uplifting Black communities and remaining competitive for funding, Rhythm & Blues Cambridge is seeking Black leaders. We are committed to maintaining a 2/3rd Black leadership model and encourage applications from individuals who reflect the communities we serve. There will be 1-2 spots for non-Black individuals to join our Board with the understanding that we will be prioritizing specific skill sets and diverse lived experiences for our Board as a whole.
● Passion for Community & Cambridge: A strong commitment to the empowerment of Black families and an understanding of the importance of celebrating Black resilience, culture, and history. A commitment to advancing equity for Black communities within a
Regional context.
● Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advocate: A demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion, particularly with regard to intersectional experiences.
● Collaborative Leadership: The ability to work effectively as part of a team, fostering collaboration and inclusivity in decision-making.
● Fundraising Experience (Preferred): Experience with grant writing, sponsorships, or fundraising initiatives, or a willingness to learn.
● Social Service Sector Experience (Preferred): Skills in developing, reviewing, or implementing community programs or initiatives are a plus.
● Professional Expertise: We are particularly looking for individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas: legal, financial management, human resources, marketing, event planning, or nonprofit leadership.
